Siltcoos River Tour July 2013

  • Post category:Tour Blog

On a day that reached 96 degrees in the Eugene area , we had a blast out on the coast while paddling the Siltcoos.  This time we had the tides on our side, to help us glide to the ocean.  At one point along the way we enjoyed a run / somersault down a dune into the water!  We still have 2 dates left for this 4 hour paddle!  August 6th (Tuesday) and August 31st (Saturday). Roll down this dune into the warm water below :) What goes up must come down! Under the Highway 101 bridge. Taking a lunch on the wet send to avoid the Snowy Plover nesting sites.

SUP Cleanup July 2013

All you need is a stable Stand Up Paddleboard, and you can load some cargo onto the deck .  If you are willing and able then try this out sometime. When standing up it is surely easier to see the stuff that lies underwater... including nasty canal trash!  Here are a few photos from this Summer. The rentals can slow down at certain points of the day and we will go out for a paddle on a SUP to pass the time. It's just hard to pass by the trash and not pick it up! 3 Wheel SUP This SUP is probably to nice to treat like this!

Mercer Lake Tour June 2013

  • Post category:Tour Blog

This past Tuesday Tour was a great day on Mercer Lake.  Located just North of Florence, this lake is off the beaten path and has different “arms” to paddle along and explore.  We had some windy weather but still were able to enjoy the shoreline.  The water was warmer than the air temp, so getting wet wasn’t a big problem! Paddling below an Osprey Stuck in the cabbage! Mercer Lake Salmonberry! Mmmmm… Paddling in the wind.

Talk about a tippy canoe!

SOLV Canoe Canal Cleanup June 2013

On a great day for paddling these ambitious canoeists filled up a boat with so much trash.  It’s easy to see the tractor tire and car tire, but there are also countless pieces of trash in the bags and buckets as well.  Way to go!  Thanks to SOLV and the City of Eugene for their efforts on this. And of course all of the willing volunteers... Coming into shore with some ballast.

Coyote Creek Tour June 2013

  • Post category:Tour Blog

It was a cool day with a small breeze, with sun breaks.  Ideal for paddling in late Spring.  We went down from the Coyote Creek Canoe Launch to Fern Ridge Reservoir.  We encountered many birds along the way, and saw signs of beaver.  There are a number of bird houses to shelter various small birds. Here is a photo of a couple kayakers at the end of a nice day on, and in, the water! Tiger Lily Anthers Western Serviceberry, an Oregon native! This is a link to the Coyote Creek hiking trails…. http://www.dfw.state.or.us/resources/visitors/fern_ridge_wildlife_area/trailguide.asp

Teamwork to haul out a stuck shopping cart.

Canoe Canal Cleanup 3/27/13

This past Monday Alton Baker Park’s Canoe Canal got cleaned up thanks to a bunch of motivated volunteers!  A large and very helpful group from Elevate Oregon came down and spent the day cleaning up the waterway.  Thanks to the City of Eugene for coordinating this effort and for supplying the work tools, safety equipment and the truck to haul away a large load of garbage! Dedicated volunteers strategizing about major garbage hauling logistics. We hauled out over 7 tires!  Also, with a lot of teamwork we were able to yank out a buried shopping cart from the water.  This was a cart from Shop & Save, a store from Coburg Rd. that hasn’t been in business for over twenty years!  This shopping cart was in the water here for that long at least...it seemed. We also removed all of the hanging blackberries to allow the underpass a little more light……

Impromptu Catacanoe

This clever group of students from Kelly Middle School came up with a simple way of making a catacanoe!  They slipped the shoelaces off of their soggy sneakers and tied the two boats together.  With a very stable craft they were able to have a whole lotta fun! This photo was taken on Agency Lake in the Wood River watershed. Here are a couple of other pics from the beautiful Wood River watershed…. Wood River

When you think of Italy, what comes to mind? Great food, ancient culture, superb football?  How about beautiful coastline and paddling?  Down on the Amalfi coast, a surprise awaits for paddlers of all skill levels.  There are many caves, inlets and pinnacles to explore.  The island of Capri is fascinating from the water!  As well, keep in mind that paddling has been around in Italy for many years too! Sea kayaking along the Amalfi Coast It’s the coastline of a thousand arches.  And while there are more boats in the water getting around from place to place, there is plenty of space on the Tyrrhenian Sea.  At the far end of this photo you can just make out the Galli islands.  This is where the Sirens were thought to have been awaiting a lonely sailor…..
