McKenzie River – Leaburg to Deerhorn – August 29th

10:30 to 11:30 –  Orientation, Instruction & Outfitting.

11:00 to 12:00  – Paddle along the moving water while learning some skills.

12:00 to 1:00  –  Lunch and talk about local natural history.

1:00 to 2:30  –  Paddling further and optional skills practice.

2:30 to 3:00  — Shuttle vehicles to and from take out.

This tour starts at Leaburg Dam Boat Launch / Slide.  This is a Lane County Park with a $4 parking fee.  This is a put in just below the dam.  We plan to paddle from here to Deerhorn Park, about 7 miles downstream.  Along the way we will improve our boating skills in this somewhat swift water.  Lovely scenery with plenty of birding in this section of the river.

The McKenzie River is a clean, clear and cold drainage coming off the flanks of Oregon’s cascade volcanoes.  After challenging rapids up river it begins to level out around Deerhorn Park.  It starts to become braided with many islands to paddle around.  This section is perfect for us to enjoy because it’s difficulty level is ideal for paddlers with some experience and it’s not too far from town.
